CASCO technical work and related ISO initiatives
This event featured sessions exploring CASCO’s technical work, including its collaboration with other ISO Technical Committees (ISO/TCs) in key areas such as sustainability and Artificial Intelligence (AI). 39th CASCO Plenary, 9-10 April 2025
The 39th CASCO plenary meetings and related working sessions took place from Wednesday, 9 April to Thursday, 10 April. They were held face-to-face (F2F) at DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung, with remote access available.

EU conformity assessment today and tomorrow
The week concluded on Friday, 11 April with a workshop titled EU assessment today and tomorrow, which provided a deep dive into the EU legislative framework, highlighting key requirements for market access and compliance.
Participants explored the role of conformity assessment, the CASCO Toolbox, and best practices for successfully navigating the EU Single Market. Through these discussions, the workshop examined how the CASCO Toolbox supports compliance with EU regulations, promotes mutual recognition, and reduces trade barriers — paving the way for smoother market access.

Conformity Assessment in the European legislative framework
This panel explored the European legislative framework, examining its modules, current implementation, and practices. It addressed how conformity assessment is used within the framework, how EU regulators are making use of the CASCO Toolbox, and discussed both the successes and challenges faced today, while also looking ahead to the future.

European legislation and its global reach
The second panel explored the evolving landscape of European legislation, focusing on key regulations and developments that shape the EU Single Market, including the Green Claims Directive (GCD), Carbon Management strategies and Digital Product Passports (DPP). Panelists discussed how these regulations impact business practices for navigating the EU Single market effectively, along with the role of conformity assessment and the CASCO Toolbox in ensuring compliance. A concrete example from Japan illustrated what these regulations mean for non-EU countries seeking market access.

Marc-Antoine Carreira da Cruz is Project Manager at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) where he is in charge of the railway sector, the road vehicles sector, the transport of dangerous goods and conformity assessment. He holds a PhD doctorate in Law from University of Nice (France) and is currently a guest researcher at University of Hasselt (Belgium) where he works on the role of standards in the approval process of road vehicles and rail application un der EU Law. He had worked during 9 years as assistant at the Parliament of the Brussels Region.

In 2000, Hiroyuki Ishii worked for Toyota Motor Corporation, specializing in powertrain design. In 2008, he shifted to intellectual property management, and by 2018, he embraced a new role in R&D strategy at Toyota Motor Europe, contributing to the advancement of forward-looking technologies. Since 2023, he has been involved in industry data platform and IT management at Toyota Motor Corporation. In parallel, he serves on the traceability team at Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), where he supports cross-industry collaboration and transparency initiatives.

Dennis Krämer studied Environmental Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden and conducted his diploma thesis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, USA. In 2008, he joined DECHEMA as a project manager in the Research and Project Coordination group. Since 2010, his primary focus has been on national and international projects related to CO₂ utilization. Currently, Dennis Krämer serves as Senior Advisor for Carbon Management at DECHEMA. He is also the coordinator of the scientific support projects for the BMBF funding initiatives: "CO₂ as a Sustainable Carbon Source – Pathways to Industrial Utilization (CO₂-WIN)," "Avoidance of Climate-Relevant Process Emissions in Industry (KlimPro Industrie)," and "Artificial Photosynthesis and Novel Materials for Hydrogen Production (SINATRA)."

Maureen is Director General Quality and Safety at Federal Public Service Economy (FPS Economy) based in Brussels. She started working in 2002 as a chemical engineer for the Federal Public Service Economy, SMEs, Self Employed and Energy at DG Quality and Safety, Consumer Safety Department, implementing European legislation into national legislation, following standardization and coordinating market surveillance. She dealt with the new legislative framework, Toys, Personal Protective Equipment, Machinery, Medical Devices, General Product Safety and Fair- and Playground equipment in the past. Since 2014 she was a member (and chair) of the EA Advisory Board (EAAB) and represented EAAB in the MAC council of EA. In 2015 she became Head of Unit International strategy at the Office of the President following internal market policies. In 2019, she became the director of the Belgian Accreditation Body BELAC. Since August 2022 she is the Director General of the directorate Quality and Safety, dealing with the quality infrastructure services Metrology, Accreditation, Standardization and Market Surveillance.
She was a seconded national expert and policy officer at DG Enterprise (now GROW), European Commission location Brussels from March 2008 until February 2013.
Prior to joining the FPS Economy, Mrs. Logghe was a chemical engineer for the State laboratory in Ghent (ISO IEC 17025 accredited). She was specialized in gas and liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Papers on developing new detection methods for corticosteroids were published in scientific magazines.
Mrs. Logghe graduated in 1994 from the University of Ghent as a Bio-engineer specialization Chemistry and started her Ph. D on the synthesis of chemical ligands for beta-agonists. She followed the « maîtrise en Biologie et Chimie appliquée à l'Université de Perpignan (France) ». She did a work placement on instrumental analysis at the RIKILT in Wageningen (the Netherlands).
Mrs. Logghe is born in 1971 and is a passionate (marathon) runner.

Martin is the Executive Director of TIC Council Europe, where he leads the organization's advocacy work towards the European Union and coordinates global advocacy on product testing and certification issues. A graduate in international relations and European Affairs from Sciences Po Lyon, Michelot was previously Deputy Director of EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy, a Prague-based think tank focusing on European affairs, where he provided strategic advice to governments on various EU issues. He has also worked for the Institut Jacques Delors, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the Brookings Institution in various research positions on transatlantic relations and European integration issues.

After graduating in Electrical Engineering in the 1980s, Reigl held primarily technical and other operating business responsibilities in Siemens. Today he heads a corporate department comprising 24 staff, overlooking and steering all aspects of technical market access conditions, product conformity, product safety and standardization for the globally distributed operations of Siemens. In his profession, Markus is known as a strong supporter of utilizing harmonized international standards to mitigate technical barriers to trade, thus facilitating fair and free market access.

Dr. Tracht has a degree and doctorate in Chemistry, has been Head of German Notifying Authority ZLS since 2023, having previously served as Deputy Head from 2021 to 2023. He held various positions in industry before joining ZLS in 2005 as an expert in the field of transport of dangerous goods. There he was significantly involved in setting up the pipeline division and responsible for several cross-sectional tasks.

Patrick is the co-founder of the Global Strategic Initiatives Group, an impact-driven consultancy that works with the international community to develop innovative, ambitious and pragmatic solutions to global challenges. Previously, Patrick worked for the Australian Government, the United Nations, and—most recently—as an independent consultant. He is also the Head of Strategic Partnerships at the Institute for Global Negotiation, and a Senior Legal Consultant at Lexbridge Lawyers. Patrick has moderated previous workshops related to conformity assessment and digitalization.
